Nothing is for sale and shop lifting is tolerated (but only one item per customer). An immersive experience at the Bombed Out Church based on the traditional British corner shop in a post-apocalyptic setting, where the tropes of a normal corner shop are distorted and nothing is quite what it seems.
Magazines are not your usual titles. Confectionery is for your mind. Chocolate bars are based on beliefs (e.g. the ‘Spirit-Fur-Bar’ for those that think animals have souls). For gamblers there is the Metaphysical Lottery and a range of ‘Scratch-My-Belief’ scratch cards. The Metaphysical Lottery takes place around an adapted National Lottery Stand to become the place where you bet on beliefs rather than numbers. The food selection is no less surprising.
There’s an “Inglish Ethnic” section, a Fresh Gross-ery and a Butchery containing dog bones, goat and pig-ears and other unidentifiable animal pieces. Vegans are also catered for with Beef, Pork and Lamb soya beans while anti Vegans are treated to Vegan Free Ale – handcrafted by omnivores.
Customers can listen to Cornershop Radio, designed to put you on edge, or watch themselves being watched on CCTV together with some of the most bizarre happenings ever caught on a shop camera. The most common reaction to Cornershop is “Wow” or “WTF”.
In its last two outings at the Superweird Happening in Liverpool and the Fat Out Fest in Manchester, it was widely referred to as “the best thing here”. Customers come back again and again, never quite sure what they experienced or what they will experience. Cast: Bob Prophette, Stuart Faulkner and Trish Dee cornershop.hydraprojects.org/cornershop
